Privacy policy

Last updated: 28 October 2026

This policy explains what personal data Low Battery collects, why, how long we keep it and what you can do about it. We collect as little as we can.

The short version

  • Our website sets no tracking cookies and shows no ads.
  • If you sign up for email, we use your address only to send you new parts and news about the series. You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • To count votes, we read the public comments on our own posts. We delete them within 30 days after each vote and keep only the totals.
  • We never sell your data.

1. Who is responsible

The controller of your personal data is [LEGAL NAME], a sole proprietor in Greece, trading as Low Battery.

For any privacy question or request, email hello@lowbattery.show.

2. What we collect and why

2.1 Email signup

  • What: your email address, the lists you joined, when you signed up and confirmed and, if you leave, when you unsubscribed. As proof of your consent, we also keep a record of the time you signed up, the IP address you signed up from and the exact words you agreed to, including that you’re 15 or over.
  • Why: to email you each new part and occasional news about the series.
  • Legal basis: your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email.
  • Who helps: Kit (Kit Inc., in the United States), our email provider, keeps the list and sends the emails for us. Kit keeps its data with Amazon Web Services in the United States (see section 5). Our own record of your consent is kept in a database from Upstash, in the EU.
  • No tracking: we don’t track whether you open our emails or click the links in them.
  • How long: until you unsubscribe. After that, we keep only a record that your address unsubscribed, so we don’t email you again by mistake, and the record of your consent for as long as we may need to show that you agreed.
  • Age: email signup is for people aged 15 and over.

2.2 Votes in the comments

  • What: the public comments on our own posts on Instagram and YouTube, with each comment’s account name (handle), the platform’s account ID for it and the time it was posted. For native polls (for example on TikTok), we use only the total count for each option.
  • Where it comes from: we read it from Instagram and YouTube with the official tools they give account owners (their apps and APIs). We read only the comments on our own posts. We don’t look at your profile, your followers or anything else you do, and we don’t build profiles of voters. Your comments stay on the platform, under its control.
  • Why: to count votes, keep them fair (for example, one vote per account, and spotting fake accounts), find hidden third options and moderate our comments.
  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running the vote you chose to take part in (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object at any time (section 6). If you do, we stop reading your comments for the vote, which means they won’t count as votes.
  • How long: we delete the comment data we collected for a vote within 30 days after the vote closes. We keep only the totals, which don’t identify anyone.

2.3 The Lookouts board

  • What: if you’re the first to find a hidden third option on a platform, your public handle, the platform and your idea.
  • Why: to credit you on our website and in the next part’s captions, as the Vote rules explain.
  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in thanking the people who find it (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • How long: for as long as the board is online. Ask us and we’ll take you off.

2.4 Messages to us

  • What: what you send us by email or direct message, and your contact details.
  • Why: to answer you.
  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in replying (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), or steps you ask for before or under a contract (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
  • How long: up to two years after the conversation ends, unless we need it longer for a legal claim.
  • If you ask for a link in a comment or a message (for example, to sign up for email), we may send it to you by direct message with the platform’s own messaging tools.

2.5 Our social media accounts

When you follow, like, comment on or message our accounts, the platform (Meta for Instagram, TikTok, and Google for YouTube) processes your data under its own privacy policy. The platforms also give us statistics about our posts and audience, such as views and the countries viewers are in. We only see these as totals. For these statistics, we and the platform may be joint controllers; the platform’s privacy policy explains how to use your rights with it, and you can also contact us.

2.6 The website

  • Hosting: our website is hosted by Vercel. Like any website, its servers process your IP address and basic technical details (such as your browser type) to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks. These logs are kept for a short time, normally no more than 30 days. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • Visit statistics: we use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits. It doesn’t use cookies, doesn’t follow you across other websites and doesn’t keep your IP address. It gives us totals only, such as page views, countries, which sites sent visitors, and how often buttons like Play, Follow and Vote are used. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing which pages people read (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • Fonts, pictures and videos are served from our own site, not from third parties.

3. Cookies and similar storage

  • No tracking cookies, no ads.
  • Only in your browser: our website keeps your pick on each part’s vote dial in your browser’s local storage (one entry per part, named lb-pick-part- and the part’s number). Until you close the tab, it also keeps two small notes in your browser’s session storage: that you’ve seen the message on the phone’s lock screen (lb-wake-seen), and the battery level the top of the page last showed you (lb-battery-seen). They stay on your device, are never sent to us, and you can clear them in your browser settings at any time.
  • Signing in: if we add a members’ area, it will use a cookie that’s needed to keep you signed in.
  • If we ever want to use any other cookies, we’ll ask you first.

4. Who we share data with

We share personal data only with:

  • Service providers that process it for us, under contract and on our instructions: Vercel (website hosting, and visit statistics with Vercel Web Analytics), Kit (Kit Inc.; email), Upstash (our record of sign-ups and consent), and other service providers that help us make and publish the series and run the business, such as our accountant.
  • Independent partners that use it under their own privacy policies: Instagram (Meta), TikTok and YouTube (Google) when you use their services, including when you comment on our posts.
  • Authorities, when the law requires it, such as the Greek tax authority (AADE).

We never sell your data, and we don’t share it for advertising.

5. Transfers outside Europe

Some of our providers are in the United States (for example, Vercel and Kit) or have staff or servers there. When your data goes outside the European Economic Area, we make sure it stays protected: either the provider is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, or we use the standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission. Kit (Kit Inc.), for example, keeps its data with Amazon Web Services in the United States; it is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, and its data processing agreement (kit.com/dpa) includes the standard contractual clauses. You can ask us for a copy of these safeguards.

6. Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of your data (access);
  • correct it (rectification);
  • delete it (erasure);
  • limit how we use it (restriction);
  • give it to you, or to another service, in a format you can reuse (portability), where we use it based on your consent or a contract;
  • stop using it where we rely on our legitimate interest (objection);
  • and, where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. This doesn’t affect what we did before.

Email hello@lowbattery.show. We reply within one month. If a request is complex, we may need up to two more months, and we’ll tell you why. We may ask you to confirm who you are.

If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (Kifisias 1–3, 115 23 Athens, www.dpa.gr) or to the data protection authority where you live or work. We’d be grateful for the chance to put it right first.

7. Deleting your data

  • Email list: use the unsubscribe link in any email. To erase your address completely, including the unsubscribe record, email hello@lowbattery.show.
  • Vote comments: if you delete your comment on the platform before the vote closes, it won’t be read or counted. Comment data we’ve already collected is deleted within 30 days after the vote closes. To have yours deleted sooner, email hello@lowbattery.show with your handle and the platform.
  • Lookouts board and anything else: email hello@lowbattery.show. We’ll delete what we can, and tell you what we have to keep and why.

These are also the data deletion instructions for the apps we use to read the comments on our own posts.

8. Children

Low Battery tells the story of a real disaster and isn’t made for young children. Email signup is for people aged 15 and over. If you think a child has given us personal data, tell us and we’ll delete it.

9. Decisions about you

We don’t make any decision with legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing, and we don’t profile you.

10. Security

We protect your data with sensible measures: only the people who need it can access it, our accounts use two-step sign-in, and we choose providers that meet recognised security standards. If a breach puts your rights at risk, we’ll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

11. Changes to this policy

We’ll post any changes here with a new date. If a change matters to you, we’ll tell you by email (if you’re on our list) or on our website before it applies.
